Print It Right: Tips for High-Quality Photo Prints

The digital age has made it easier than ever to capture and share memories. But there’s something truly special about holding a tangible print in your hands. Whether you’re a client who has received photos from a professional photographer like me, or someone considering printing your own cherished moments, printing your photos is an essential part of preserving your memories. A beautifully framed print, a custom photo album, or a canvas can transform digital files into lasting keepsakes.

That’s why I’ve created this blot post to help everyone—from clients to casual photographers—navigate the printing process with confidence. From selecting the right printing options to understanding why professional-quality prints matter, this post ensures your photos look their absolute best—every single time. Here are some tips for high-quality photo prints!

Step 1: Use Professional Printing Services

If you’re working with a professional photographer, chances are they’ve provided you with access to a gallery of your images. I use Pic-Time. Pic-Time offers professional-quality prints in various sizes and finishes, ensuring your images are reproduced with the highest standards. Here’s how to order from a gallery:

  1. Log into your gallery: Use the unique link provided to access your photos.
  2. Select your images: Browse the gallery and choose the photos you want to print.
  3. Choose your print options: Pic-Time offers options like prints, canvases, framed photos, and albums. Select the size and finish that best suits your needs.
  4. Place your order: Complete your purchase, and your prints will be delivered straight to your door.

By using services like Pic-Time, you’ll avoid the quality issues often associated with general photo-printing stores. Please note that all items purchased via Pic-Time, or other cloud-based platforms, are processed through their store and will not come directly from the photographer. Be sure to double-check all purchases thoroughly before checking out, and always double check with the gallery provider or the photographer if you have any questions!

Step 2: Avoid General Photo-Printing Stores

Many photographers, like me, allow personal printing rights. That means you have the right to print your photos for personal purposes and take them to a store of your choice. However, be careful where you go. While it may be tempting to print your photos at places like Walgreens, CVS, or Walmart, the results often don’t do your photos justice. These stores typically use lower-quality materials and printing methods, which can result in:

  • Poor color accuracy
  • Blurry or pixelated images
  • Fading over time

Just remember, these general stores are cheap for a reason. Cheap printers, cheap ink, cheap paper. For the best results, stick to professional printing services through your gallery or a local professional printing location.

Step 3: How to Resize or Print Your Photos Elsewhere

If you’re printing your own photos or choosing an alternative service, here are some general tips to ensure they look great. While photographers provide high-resolution images ready for printing, once the photos are downloaded from the gallery, it’s up to you to ensure they’re printed correctly. Be mindful of selecting reputable printing services, as I am unable to oversee or guarantee the quality of prints made outside the gallery.

Resizing Photos

  • Resolution: For the best results, always use the high-resolution images provided in the gallery. These are 300 DPI and optimized for high-quality printing. Some galleries also include low-resolution files for social media, so ensure you’re using the correct ones for prints.
  • Crop: Use a photo editor to crop the image to the desired size, maintaining the original composition whenever possible. Double and triple check the crop and make sure that your photos are not missing feet (or heads)!
  • Avoid Upscaling: Enlarging a small photo can make it pixelated. Always start with the highest-resolution file available.

Printing Photos

  • Use a professional lab: Look for labs like Millers, Nations Photo Lab, or Artifact Uprising for excellent results. Here in Knoxville, F32 is a great local lab.
  • Choose the right finish: Matte, glossy, and lustre finishes each have different effects. Consider how and where the photo will be displayed.
  • Print test copies: Before ordering a large batch, print one or two to ensure you’re happy with the quality.

Final Tips

  • Consider the product type: Not all images are suitable for every type of print or product. For example, large canvas prints can sometimes result in less detail as the porous material may not transfer every fine element perfectly. Be mindful of the image’s resolution and the intended print medium to ensure the best outcome.
  • Store your prints properly: Keep them in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, to prevent fading.
  • Frame with care: Use acid-free materials and UV-protective glass for added longevity.

Whether you’re printing family photos, wedding memories, or your favorite travel snapshots, following these tips will help ensure your prints are stunning and long-lasting. If you have any questions or need recommendations for professional labs, feel free to reach out to me.

A memorable elopement at the foothills of the Smokies! And guess what? It didn’t actually occur IN the NPS. Shocked! 🤣

Remember, there are so many amazing locations in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, Townsend, Sevierville, and Wears Valley that are perfect for a “smoky mountain elopement.” Find the place that speaks to you! This mid-century mod location was perfect for Alaina and Travis.

And then…hire me to photograph it! Easy peasy!

I sent over 47,000 images to clients in 2024. When I tell you that indecision fatigue is a real thing when posting to social media, I mean it.

So, here is a single photo to post. I love it. It’s a favorite.

Pretty simple. The best man dropped the rings and we all about lost our minds 🤣

Brides & Grooms, take note! The biggest timeline delay I saw in 2024 across multiple weddings at multiple venues?

Getting-ready logistics!

If you want your VIP (Mom, sibling, bestie) to help you into your outfit, they need to be ready before your photographer arrives.

This isn’t a requirement, but if you’re envisioning those special, candid moments—make sure their hair, makeup, and outfits are done so they can focus on YOU.

This also goes for those moments where people need to tie a tie, or fold a pocket square! Make sure to try those items on before the wedding day 😉

💡 Pro tip: Your HMUAs are amazing! Work with your hair and makeup team to create a schedule that ensures anyone helping you get dressed is ready before your photographer arrives. This keeps everything running smoothly and stress-free!
