A Lakeside Engagement Session with a Private Boathouse

There is something incredibly peaceful about a lakeside engagement session. While East Tennessee is well known for its mountain views, this session was a reminder that beautiful engagement photos can be found in so many different places. Rather than heading to one of East Tennessee’s more popular photo locations, Grace and Barrett chose a private lakeside area that perfectly matched the relaxed feel they wanted for their engagement session. It was quiet, peaceful, and the kind of place that reminds you not every engagement session needs to be monumental. They just need to be memorable.

Between the charming boathouse, weathered dock, calm water, and nearby creek, every part of the evening offered a new backdrop without ever feeling rushed. As a photographer, these are the kinds of engagement sessions I love most. It’s about creating space for couples to slow down, laugh together, and enjoy this season of life before the wedding day arrives.

Why Choose a Lakeside Engagement Session?

A lakeside engagement session offers something completely different from the mountains. The water creates soft reflections, the open shoreline gives couples room to move naturally, and the slower pace makes the entire session feel relaxed. Whether you’re sitting on a dock, walking along the shoreline, or watching the sunset over the water, there’s a sense of calm that naturally comes through in your photos.

For couples planning a wedding in the next few weeks or even next year, choosing a location that reflects your personalities will always matter more than choosing the trendiest place. The best engagement photos happen when you feel comfortable enough to simply enjoy being together.

A Private Boathouse and a Summer Evening

We began the session around the private boathouse and dock while the evening light was still soft. The warm wood, string lights, and calm water created a setting that felt inviting without needing anything extra. Grace and Barrett spent more time talking, laughing, and enjoying each other than thinking about the camera, and those are almost always my favorite kinds of sessions.

As the sun dropped lower in the sky, we wandered around the property, making the most of every corner. The golden light reflected across the water and gave everything a warm glow that only seems to happen during summer sunsets.

To finish the evening, we kicked off our shoes and stepped into the creek. Those barefoot photos ended up being some of my favorites because they felt completely natural. Sometimes the best moments happen when couples stop worrying about posing and simply enjoy the experience together.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos

Grace and Barrett absolutely nailed their outfit choices, and I think their session is a great example of how to dress for summer engagement photos.

Their first look felt classic and timeless. The soft neutral colors complemented the lakeside setting without competing with it, while Grace’s flowing white dress added movement that photographed beautifully by the water. For their second outfits, they kept the same relaxed feel while introducing a little more color and personality. The outfit change gave the second half of the session its own look without feeling like an entirely different shoot.

One of the biggest pieces of advice I give couples is to dress for the location. If we’re planning a lakeside engagement session, think about fabrics that move easily, shoes you’re comfortable walking in, and colors that complement the environment instead of overpowering it. Light neutrals, soft blues, earthy greens, and subtle patterns almost always photograph beautifully around the water.

Most importantly, wear something that feels like you. Your engagement photos should reflect your relationship, not a version of yourselves you don’t recognize. Or even better, go barefoot for a fun, carefree vibe.

Planning Your Own Engagement Session

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing couples is helping them find a location that feels personal. East Tennessee is filled with incredible places for engagement sessions, and while this particular lakeside area is private, there are so many other beautiful locations to explore. Whether you picture yourselves beside the water, in a wildflower field, downtown, or high in the mountains, your engagement session should reflect who you are as a couple.
